5th Grade

Physical Education

Students will experience a variety of activities in Physical Education. Lifetime fitness will be stressed through individual, dual, and team sports. Students will learn the rules and proper procedures for successful participation in all units studied. Written examinations and skill check lists are part of the curriculum. A physician’s note is required to be excused from this class for more than one day. Physical Education Uniforms are required and can be purchased at the Winona Middle School Physical Education Department.


Health

This course is designed to promote awareness of physical, mental, emotional and social developmental needs for optimal health throughout life. This course is designed to assist each student in developing and maintaining a lifestyle that promotes wellness by providing accurate health related information as the foundation for making educated, responsible, and healthy decisions. Instructional activities in the course will include group activities, presentations, lecture, independent work, guest speakers, and hands-on learning. Students will use textbooks as well as videos and supplemental materials to further the understanding of the course material.

6th Grade

Physical Education

Health 6

This course is designed to promote awareness of physical, mental, emotional and social developmental needs for optimal health throughout life. This course is designed to assist each student in developing decision-making skills in the area of personal health promotion in order to maintain a lifestyle that promotes wellness. Students will be provided with accurate, up-to-date health related information using a variety of educational instructional activities such as; group activities, presentations, lecture, independent work, guest speakers, videos and hands-on learning.

7th Grade

Students will experience a variety of activities in Physical Education. Lifetime fitness will be stressed through individual, dual, and team sports. Students will learn the rules and proper procedures for successful participation in all units studied. Written examinations and skill check lists are part of the curriculum. 8th Grade

Eighth graders experience a variety of activities in Physical Education. Lifetime fitness is stressed through individual, dual, and team sports. Students learn the rules and proper procedures for successful participation in all units studied. Written examinations and skill checklists are part of the Physical Education Curriculum. A physician’s note is required to be excused from this class for more than one day. Physical Education Uniforms are required and can be purchased from the Winona Middle School Physical Education Department. Health lessons will include: HIV/AIDS, & other STDs.

During their time at the Winona Middle School the students will enjoy a wide variety of activities that will challenge, educate and allow for growth in many different areas. Students will be challenged with individual, dual, and team sports. As well as lifelong and fitness activities. Students will have the opportunity to learn through many different teaching styles while participating in a wide variety of classroom settings.

At the Winona Middle School our Physical Education Department has the luxury of utilizing 2 gymnasiums, a 25 meter swimming pool with 2 diving boards, a newly updated Fitness Center, 3 baseball/softball fields, 6 tennis courts and acres of green space.

Health Education is taught within the Physical Education classes for sixth, seventh and eighth grade students. Each student will receive two units of Health each year starting in sixth grade. Each unit lasting approximately 7-10 class days.

Department Goal:

The Physical Education Department at the Winona Middle School embraces a comprehensive Physical Education model. Our goal is to provide an atmosphere that is enjoyable for the students, while emphasizing the importance of good health. The curriculum is student centered, based on individual differences and geared toward accomplishing lifelong learning and healthy living habits.
