AVID Scholars 2nd Quarter

The AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) Program at Winona Senior High School recently recognized the AVID Scholars of the Quarter for the second quarter of the 2020-21 school year.

From the 9/10 AVID cohort, Emily Swartling was selected, while Ashley Roetter was selected from the 11/12 AVID cohort.

According to her teachers, Swartling, a 9th grader, has put in a lot of effort this quarter to get her grades up and maintained that momentum through the end of the semester. She utilized office hours and followed up with teachers in order to plan, organize and complete assignments.

Roetter’s bubbly personality and positive outlook really shined in the AVID 12 classroom. Being a senior during a pandemic is tough, but Roetter powered through many obstacles and her sense of humor kept many around her smiling. She was diligent in her work, and her active participation in class activities helped enhance the learning for all.

Math teacher Scott Halverson said: “Ashley is a personable, joyful young lady. She displayed tremendous resolve as a student and was always determined to work toward understanding and not just completion.”

The Scholar of the Quarter is awarded to an AVID student who exhibits excellence in academics, leadership and individual determination to succeed. AVID helps students build skills they will need to become college graduates. Students enroll in rigorous classes and in the AVID elective. The pillars of the curriculum are strong writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization and reading skills. AVID electives are available at Winona Middle School and Winona Senior High School.
