The Winona Senior High School gymnastics team saved its best for last.
The Winhawks had their best performance of the season Saturday at the MSHSL Section 1A meet and finished second as a team with 140.45 points — topping their previous season high by more than three points.
But the highlights didn’t stop there. Junior Chloe Hughes won the vault (9.775) and the bars (8.850) and placed second in the all-around (36.900) to qualify for state in every event. Senior Bella Iverson Jones qualified for state in the vault, bars and beam. She was fifth on the vault (9.2), fourth on bars (8.350) and third on beam (9.2). Freshman Natayla Franz just missed out on qualifying for state by placing sixth on vault.
The MSHSL state meet begins at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 22 at Roy Wilkins Auditorium in St. Paul.
Top-ranked Pine Island won the meet with a 144.950.
