Winona Area Public Schools, the best choice for students and their families in the Winona area since 1861, is getting ready to welcome the Class of 2035.

Is it time for kindergarten? Then you are invited to discover what WAPS can do for the future Winhawk in your family.

WAPS will hold “Kindergarten Kickoff,” an informational and fun event for future Winhawks and their families from 5:30-7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 7 at Winona Middle School, 1570 Homer Road.

Prospective kindergarten students and their families will be able to:

  • Learn about Winona Area Public Schools can offer, including information about transportation, school nutrition and more
  • Meet WAPS principals and administrators
  • Participate in fun activities with their family
  • Get their photo taken with Herky
  • Complete the registration process with the help of district office staff, or receive more information about how to finish the registration process at home

If you are unable to attend the event, visit winonaschools.org/kindergarten to learn more about the registration process, view testimonials from current WAPS families and watch videos about what life is like as a kindergartner in the district.

Registration for the 2022-23 school year will begin on Tuesday, Feb. 1. Registration can be completed online at winonaschools.org/enroll, or by calling 507-494-0870.

Once registered, students will receive an invitation to attend an open house at their school scheduled for Thursday, March 31. The open house is an opportunity for incoming kindergartners and their families to meet teachers, explore their new school and receive a Winhawk goodie bag.

WAPS also proudly offers the Ríos Spanish Immersion program, a free choice program that provides educational experiences that support academic and linguistic development in Spanish and English. In Grades K-4, the Ríos program is housed at Jefferson Elementary. Applications for the program will be accepted throughout February. More information about Ríos can be found at winonaschools.org/rios.

Winona Area Public Schools embraces the challenge to develop students who can problem solve, work together and take risks. This starts in kindergarten by learning through play. Curriculum at all levels will ensure students are given opportunities to understand multicultural perspectives and how inclusion is important in a democratic society.
