WAPS Expands Ríos Spanish Immersion, formally Spanish Language Immersion Program (SLIP)

Winona Area Public Schools Ríos Spanish Immersion, formally known as Spanish Language Immersion Program (SLIP) will be expanding in the 2018-2019 school year. The goal of Ríos Spanish Immersion is to provide educational experiences, beginning in kindergarten and sustained through grade 12.  Ríos supports academic and linguistic development in two languages and develops students’ appreciation of their own and other cultures.

The SLIP program launched in the 2014-2015 school year with a kindergarten and first grade class. Each year following, SLIP added the next grade level. In the upcoming 2018-2019 school year, our Ríos Spanish Immersion will launch in Winona Middle School’s 5th grade. Ríos Spanish Immersion will continue to serve as a choice program for students in grades kindergarten through 5th grade. Students will become proficient listeners, speakers, writers and readers in both Spanish and English languages.

Jefferson Elementary will house Ríos Spanish Immersion kindergarten through 4th grade. A minimum of 20 students will participate at each grade level with a maximum of 24 students in kindergarten. The 2018-2019 kindergarten class has 20 students currently enrolled. Interested parties can apply for entrance into the program by enrolling online at winonaschools.org/enroll.

All WAPS elementary schools offer the same rigorous core curriculum in reading, writing, math, science, and social studies. Immersion students will study the same core curriculum and Minnesota academic standards, which connects subject areas.
