Students at Washington-Kosciusko Elementary recently came together to support children entering foster care by making fleece tie blankets.

The students, as well as W-K staff members, also assembled duffle bags filled with essential items to donate to Winona County.

Aside from being a great opportunity for students to develop fine motor skills and work on their social skills while completing a group project, this project also fit into the W-K theme for the month: generosity.

Although generosity can be a difficult value to teach, this real-world experience allowed students to understand its true significance. This project gave students the opportunity to engage in generous acts of service that will have a lasting impact in Winona county. By participating in this project, they learned that generosity isn’t just about giving things, but about offering time and care to those who need it most.

Social workers from Winona County came to receive the bags and talked with the students about how a small duffle bag filled with personal care items and a warm blanket can make a world of difference to a child entering foster care. They explained that the blanket and bag would be offering the child a sense of security and comfort during a challenging time of transition where they often have little control and uncertainty about their world. The students were also able to ask the social workers questions about how the duffle bags would be utilized.

This project was a powerful reminder that even small acts of kindness can make a big difference in the lives of others.
