In 1992, more than 100 Winona Senior High School students were in the cast for "Guys and Dolls." From left: Sara Lawson, Karah Glaveris, Phillip Steffes and Kurt Koehler were among them.

The 1992 musical turned out to be a history lesson for the more than 100 Winona Senior High School students in the cast.

“Guys and Dolls,” set in the early 1950s in New York, is a comedy based on gamblers.

Nearly three decades later, the tradition of the musical returns at Winona Senior High School with four performances of “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers,” at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 14, 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 15, 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 16 and 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 16. “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers” takes place in the 1850s, about 100 years before “Guys and Dolls.”

According to a 1992 article in the Winona Daily News, Bruce Ramsdell said the students had to learn a few things from a bygone era, such as clothiers who would sell suits with two pairs of pants and product names such as Vitalis and Barbasol.

“The play is really kind of a window to the past for the kids,” said Ramsdell, the director of the play. “The era is a part of history that is so recent that it’s not taught in school a lot now. If you think about it, these kids missed things as recent as The Beatles and Vietnam.”

All three showings were sold out, the yearbook said.
