Schmidt, Macon advance to MSHSL state finals

MINNEAPOLIS — The Winona Senior High School girls swimming and diving team will have two representatives in Saturday's finals of the MSHSL Class A state meet.

Junior Issara Schmidt is sitting in second place after the diving preliminaries held Thursday at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center. Schmidt earned 283.80 points for her dives Thursday, just a few points behind Olivia Motter (287.20) of Rocori.

Junior Morgan Walker finished 23rd overall in diving.

In the swimming preliminaries held Friday, sophomore Carolyn Macon qualified eighth in the 100 butterfly in 58.03 seconds.

Macon also qualified in the 200 freestyle and finished 24th overall.

Winona's 200 medley relay team of Macon, Mary Hoffman, Anna MacLennan and Emily Robison was disqualified for getting out of the blocks too fast, but the experience will be valuable for next year.
