Winona Area Public Schools is looking for families to host an intern in the Ríos Spanish Dual Language Immersion program.
Every year, future educators from Spanish-speaking countries like Spain, Guatemala, El Salvador and Mexico come to Winona to assist teachers in the Ríos program. These interns are either pursuing or have recently completed a college degree with an education focus.
The program is looking to find individuals or families who are willing to host an intern for 3-5 months. While most of our host families have children who attend Winona Area Public Schools, It can be difficult for families with elementary-aged children to also welcome another person into their chaos.
This is an opportunity that could be perfect for:
- Recent empty-nesters
- Families with older children
- Retired individuals
- Young couples who haven’t yet started a family
Host families are integral to the success of the program and are expected to provide:
- A private room for the intern
- A clean and healthy living environment
- Three daily meals
- Inclusion in family traditions and outings
Some families provide transportation to and from school, however other families in the Ríos program are willing and able to provide daily transportation if this is an issue.
The interns not only improve the educational experience for students in the Ríos Spanish Immersion program, they also contribute to the cultural enrichment of our community by becoming regular Winonans: working out at the YMCA, volunteering for local organizations or hosting bilingual storytime at the Winona Public Library.
If you are interested, please fill out a form at waps.pub/riosinterns. Questions? Contact Ying Hou at ying.hou@winona.k12.mn.us or 507-494-0865.
The deadline to apply is March 31. Without host families, the program cannot have interns available in classrooms.
