Herkymania; WSHS football players read to elementary students

On Tuesday, September 25th Winona Area Public Elementary Schools gyms were filled with students waiting with excitement for the Herkymania event. During Herkymania, WSHS varsity football players along with mascot Herky, visit elementary students and stress the value of being a good student, teach them the Winhawk school song and end by reading to them in their homerooms. Terrell Hall, Senior at WSHS who plays Wide Receiver and Defensive Back on the Winhawks football team said “ I love the energy during Herkymania and all the great questions students have asked me after my reading. Their imagination is inspiring and it is a great experience for everyone.”

Mr. John Cassellius started the Herkymania tradition in 2008 and takes place each year during homecoming week. John’s mission was to connect upperclassmen with elementary students to create a bond and trust. During Herkymania, John talks to elementary students about listening and respecting their teachers and how important it is to try hard in school. “Students listen and look up to football players and I am hopeful all elementary students will continue to grow and become successful Winhawks. It is exciting to see their respect and positive connection with the players.” said Cassellius.
