  • Project Name: Children's Theater Company "The Hobbit"

  • Education Purpose & Goals:
  • After reading The Hobbit, students will be provided a culminating experience of attending a professional drama performance. The novel will be compared and contrasted to the drama performance aligned with 7th grade LA standards.

  • Project Name: SE MN Field Investigation (Cave Trip)
  • $ Amount:  $936.25
  • Education Purpose & Goals:
  • WAPS will take students to various geologic places of interest in Southeastern MN where they will observe karst, springs, sinkholes, streams and groundwater. The purpose is to provide all eighth grade students with a common learning experience centered around our unique karst landforms and the geologic processes involved in shaping our landscape. Our goals include helping students understand the major characteristics of our landscape, how it formed and why we should be concerned about our groundwater.

  • Education Purpose & Goals:
  • To provide funding for students to attend the Winona State Regional History Day competition in March if they are selected after the local competition in February.

  • Project Name: 6th Grade Fort Snelling and Minnesota State Capitol Trip
  • $ Amount:  $1,350.00
  • Education Purpose & Goals:
  • The purpose of this trip is to provide all of the 6th grade students with the opportunity to see the newly renovated Minnesota State Capitol and tour Fort Snelling. The goals of this trip are to help students apply what they have learned about the Minnesota state capitol and Minnesota history by taking a field trip to these two historic sites.

  • $ Amount:  $2,000.00
  • Education Purpose & Goals:
  • The author visit gets students excited about reading, and this particular author, Katie McKy, does a very high energy presentation based on her books.

  • Project Name: Mayo Health Fair
  • $ Amount:  $500.00
  • Education Purpose & Goals:
  • Mayo Clinic offers a yearly experience to students with the desire to go into a healthcare-related field. Students will get to interact both interactively with demonstrations and speak with representatives for over 50 different departments within the Mayo system. The Human Anatomy this year has 51 students who plan to attend this event based on their interest in medicine.

  • Project Name:Music Staff Whiteboards, markers, & erasers
  • $ Amount:  $257.70
  • Education Purpose & Goals:
  • These double-sided music staff whiteboards would be used to help students practice writing music notation, note names, solfa syllables, note values, scales, intervals, chords, chord progressions, music symbols, rhythms, and other things through writing, creating, and performing. These boards would be utilized for informal assessments, as well. Having music staves on one side and a blank board on the other provides endless opportunities for use in the general music and choir classrooms, giving each student more hands-on practice than using SMARTBoards alone. It also creates less waste than paper.

  • Project Name: Native American Music Presentation
  • $ Amount:  $300.00
  • Education Purpose & Goals:
  • Each year WAPS will provide a Native American music presentation for our 5th graders to help fulfill the required MN music standards. Lyz Jaakola does a wonderful job of exposing students to Native American music and provides a very educational presentation and performance. She also does a presentation at Winona State University on the same day. Students have activities prior to and after the presentation to enrich the learning experience, as well.

  • $ Amount:  $500.00
  • Education Purpose & Goals:
  • Trisha Speed Shaskan, author, comes to our 6th grade language arts class to teach our students about perspective writing. She helps them see how to generate ideas and how to retell a story from a different character's point of view.

  • Project Name: 6th Grade Minnesota Author
  • $ Amount:  $250.00
  • Education Purpose & Goals:
  • The purpose of this activity is to bring Minnesota author William Durbin in to speak to all 6th grade students. He will discuss the process of researching to write historical fiction and will conduct a writing workshop with all 6th graders. Students will learn how to write from the perspective of another person.

  • Project Name: Birds of Prey -Sixth Grade
  • $ Amount:  $300.00
  • Education Purpose & Goals:
  • The purpose and goals of our presentation are to educate students about Minnesota birds of prey, adaptations, defenses, and what students can do to protect bird habitats in our community.

  • Project Name: Choir 8 La Crosse Rotary Lights Performance
  • $ Amount:  $220.00
  • Education Purpose & Goals:
  • This trip will provide the 8th Grade Choir students an opportunity to gain performance in the public at a community holiday seasonal event. It will also give the students the chance to bond as an ensemble through a shared experience of music making.
