The Foundation for Winona Area Public Schools awarded a total of $3,517 in grants in October. The grants will support activities that support students such as a field trips to the Guthrie Theater, supplies for the Student Support Services office at the high school and funding for a new club that helps restore pinball machines.

Students to Benefit: 154
Educational Purpose: To provide a cultural experience visiting the Twin Cities and attending a professional theatrical adaptation of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol at the Guthrie Theatre. Students will compare & contrast a literature version of the book they have been studying in class and what they see in person on a stage.
Pinhawk Club – WALC ($500.00)
Students to Benefit: 20
Educational Purpose: The benefit is provide students with hands-on experience working with pinball restoration and repair. Goals include problem solving, electronic repair and theory and soldering skills.
WSHS Student Support Services Supplies – WSHS ($182.91)
Students to Benefit: 100
Educational Purpose: The overall purpose is to support students social, emotional and behavioral well being. This grant provides support and interventions that will enable students to cope and engage in instruction.
Graphic Novels – WSHS Social Studies Department ($409.60)
Students to Benefit: 170
Educational Purpose: Graphic novels can be read regardless of reading levels. It is a primary source and provides a first- hand account of the experience and memory of George Takei. The book covers the concept of what democracy is and its meaning for different Americans. It connects with the MN Standards connected to ethnic studies and social justice education.
