The following are grants awarded by the Foundation for WAPS for February and March. 

Physics Force

Amount: $627

Education Purpose & Goals: Physics Force is a dynamic presentation that is put on by the University of Minnesota to get kids excited about Science. Fifth-grade students will attend the show that they put on in Rochester.

Number of students to benefit: 193

Other benefits (school, individuals, community): This experience promotes science to our students. It gives them the opportunity to see demonstrations and experiments that we cannot provide for them.

Ríos Math Night at Jefferson

Amount: $500

Education Purpose & Goals: Share with students experiences, activities and material related with math. Promote collaboration with families. Give students and families the opportunity to bring supplies to their homes to continue with math practice.

Number of students to benefit: 100

Other benefits (school, individuals, community): Connect the community with the Ríos program and the school culture. Let parents feel the education their child is experiencing in Spanish. Build connections between families and students through math games that they can play together at home. Give math supplies to families that may not otherwise have them.

Sensory Path at Goodview

Amount: $500

Education Purpose & Goals: The goal is to build a sensory path in Goodview Elementary like the ones that have been put into place at other elementary buildings. Goodview doesn't have walls, a sensory room, or any area for kids that need a sensory break.

Number of students to benefit: 300

Other benefits (school, individuals, community): A sensory path would benefit all students by utilizing a series of movements and increase cognition. This will also allow for a decrease in behaviors which allows students to learn as there would be less disruptions throughout the whole building.

Herky Code Cart at Goodview

Amount: $325

Education Purpose & Goals: The goal of this request is to gain a cart/shelf that can stay in the lunchroom as well as purchase games and activities for the students to do when they finish eating. We have tried to implement this with coloring sheets and decks of cards which has been successful but would like to purchase additional games such as tic-tac-toe, memory, etc. to continue to engage students, keep them occupied, and work on social skills.

Concordia Language Village Trip WMS and WSHS

Amount: $1,520

Education Purpose & Goals: Our yearly trip offers students taking Spanish and German an opportunity to hone their language skills and gain cultural knowledge in an immersion environment without having to leave the country. The language village staff is comprised of native and heritage speakers as well as university students majoring in the target language. Staff is trained in techniques to help students comprehend and feel comfortable in the environment.

Sensory Play in Preschool at Goodview

Amount: $495.05

Education Purpose & Goals: A sensory path would benefit all students by utilizing a series of movements and increase cognition. This will also allow for a decrease in behaviors which allows students to learn as there would be less disruptions throughout the whole building.

Young Writers Conference for 3rd and 4th Grade

Amount: $480

Education Purpose & Goals: This is a great opportunity for students to learn more about writing from local authors. Students have always loved this experience. Lowering the cost will make it more accessible for more students.
