Foundation for WAPS awards $15K in grants so far in 2021-22

Foundation for WAPS grants total $15,443.45

Since the beginning of the school year, the Foundation for Winona Area Public Schools has awarded 25 grants worth a total of $15,443.45 to support students in Winona Area Public Schools. 

The single purpose of the Foundation for WAPS is to enrich and expand educational opportunities in WAPS by supporting important programs and projects that would otherwise not be available via normal district resources. 

The grants supported by the Foundation so far this school year include bringing in a guest speaker for a multicultural art class, providing kindergarten rooms with new dramatic play centers, supporting field trips to the Minnesota Marine Art Museum and the Woodlawn Cemetery walk, and helping with expenses for FFA members to attend the national convention in Indianapolis and orchestra members to attend the trip to New York. 

The full list of grants are as follows: 

Brain Pop site - $230

  • School: Winona Middle School
  • Number of Students to Benefit: 140
  • Educational Purpose: Brain Pop is standards based and current. It provides worksheets, activities, and videos that are at the 5th grade educational level.

National FFA Convention - $400

  • School: Winona Senior High School
  • Number of Students to Benefit: 5
  • Educational Purpose: The National FFA Convention has various workshops the students can attend ranging from agriculture to broader topics. Students will also have the ability to connect with other FFA members from Minnesota and throughout the United States. The students can then bring back new ideas and perspectives to Winona.

TI30XIIS Calculators for loan for those in need - $500

  • School: Winona Senior High School
  • Number of Students to Benefit: 40
  • Educational Purpose: This type of calculator is used by all students from Algebra through Pre-Calculus. This grant will help restock the supply of calculators loaned to students in need.

Dramatic Play in Kindergarten - $529.42

  • School: Goodview Elementary
  • Number of Students to Benefit: 50
  • Educational Purpose: Dramatic Play in Kindergarten teaches and supports expressive language, encourages creativity and imagination, and supports students’ social and emotional development.

Woodlawn Cemetery Walk - $262.15

  • School: Winona Middle School
  • Number of Students to Benefit: 153
  • Educational Purpose: The 6th grade attends the Cemetery Walk every year to learn about local Winona history, which is a part of the 6th grade social studies curriculum.

AVID Testing Preparation Tools - $480

  • School: Winona Senior High School
  • Number of Students to Benefit: 12
  • Educational Purpose: This grant will fund the taking of the PSAT in October for AVID Juniors, and to purchase those same students ACT preparation books and workbooks. AVID is a college preparation program for students who may not otherwise have applied to college, or who may have struggled completing a 4-year program.

Winona Senior High Orchestra Trip to New York - $80 per person up to $1840

  • School: Winona Senior High School
  • Number of Students to Benefit: 23
  • Educational Purpose: The WSHS Orchestra travels to New York City once every three years so that every student has the opportunity for the cultural learning experience of this trip. The students will attend a New York Philharmonic concert, a Broadway play, and visit some other main attractions and memorials that are unique to New York City.

Bike Club – Supply Expenses - $500

  • School: Winona Area Learning Center
  • Number of Students to Benefit: 25
  • Educational Purpose: The WALC Bike Club has fixed and given away over a dozen donated bikes to students in need. This grant will help purchase supplies to fix the bikes, locks to keep the bikes safe, and helmets for students to use while riding their bike and teach the students a skill on bike repair.

Outdoor Education Fishing - $500

  • School: Winona Senior High School
  • Number of Students to Benefit: 80
  • Educational Purpose: The Outdoor Education Physical Education course offers a variety of activities that allow students to connect with the outdoors. This grant will replace fishing poles and tackle for the fishing portion of that class.

WMS Cares Closet - $205

  • School: Winona Middle School
  • Number of Students to Benefit: 100
  • Educational Purpose: The WMS Cares Closet provides personal hygiene items to students in need so they can concentrate on their classroom work without being distracted or self-conscious.

Kindergarten Dramatic Play - $500

  • School: Jefferson Elementary
  • Number of Students to Benefit: 60
  • Educational Purpose: A Dramatic Play center is a place students can go to pretend, imagine, and be creative. Students can learn and develop skills in all learning domains through pretend play.

Guest Speaker for High School Multicultural Art Class - $82.50

  • School: Winona Senior High School
  • Number of Students to Benefit: 22-50
  • Educational Purpose: The focus of the Multicultural Art Class is to use art to gain a greater understanding of others from a cultural and historical perspective. The guest speaker will join the class to speak to students about Hmong culture, history, and art.

Spanish 4 Children’s Books to send to Nicaragua in collaboration with Wisconsin Nicaragua Partners - $312

  • School: Winona Senior High School
  • Number of Students to Benefit: 19
  • Educational Purpose: WSHS Spanish 4 students have the opportunity to author children’s books to donate to a library in Nicaragua. Incorporating this project into the curriculum increases the students’ intrinsic motivation and allows them to synthesize their knowledge through composing, creating, imagining, and exploring language. Half of the dollar amount will go to books for Nicaragua, and half will go to copies of the books for the WAPS RIOS program.

Breakout EDU - $192.21

  • School: WAPS – All Elementary Schools
  • Number of Students to Benefit: 241
  • Educational Purpose: Breakout EDU offers over 1,800 games in a wide variety of topics that are designed to be standards-aligned and work with any academic curricula. Students are able to work collaboratively to problem solve, work through successes and failures in a safe environment, and review new learning that helps deepen their academic skills.

LEO PayDay Rewards - $500

  • School: Winona Senior High – LEO Program
  • Number of Students to Benefit: 16
  • Educational Purpose: Mental health and motivation are tightly interwoven and having a tangible reward to offer is very helpful for students in the LEO program. Students complete assigned work for tickets to a raffle drawing and a chance to shop for their own prize online. Work completion, task-management, and coping skills are a few of the main goals for this program.

Field Trip to Minnesota Marine Art Museum - $66

  • School: Winona Senior High School
  • Number of Students to Benefit: 33
  • Educational Purpose: Students from the Ceramics and Intro to Art classes will be able to get guided tours to provide more information about the artwork and artists. The students will benefit by being able to visit an art museum and hopefully increase their passion for the arts.

Baertsch Junkyard Tough: A “Tail” of Bravery - $450.53

  • School: W-K, Jefferson, and Goodview
  • Number of Students to Benefit: 765
  • Educational Purpose: Funds awarded through the WEINMANN ELEMENTARY ENRICHMENT FUND- Local author Jenny Baertsch will visit all of the elementary schools and talk about being a writer and the message of her book. Writing encourages students to be creative and use their imagination. The author visits are free—the grant will purchase copies of the book for the school libraries and classrooms.

Tools for Teachers – Learning for Kids - $300

  • School: All WAPS Schools
  • Number of Students to Benefit: 875
  • Educational Purpose: Instructional coaches focus on providing up-to-the-minute teaching strategies that support every learner. Teachers will be provided basic tools and props for trying out new ways to help their students collaborate, review, and learn.

Character Counts - $500

  • School: Goodview Elementary
  • Number of Students to Benefit: 200
  • Educational Purpose: Character Counts is a school-wide program that focuses on positive character traits. This will help students develop positive behavior skills at school that will hopefully transition to their homes and the community.

AVID College Visit to WSU - $93.64

  • School: Winona Senior High School
  • Number of Students to Benefit: 68
  • Educational Purpose: It is important for all students to go to college campuses so they can get a better idea of what post-high school options are available. This grant will cover the cost of one bus to take the students to and from Winona State University.

Guest Author Speaker - $500

  • School Name: Winona Middle School
  • Number of Students to Benefit: 130
  • Educational Purpose: Trisha Speed Shaskan is a former Winona graduate and a published author who will be presenting a creative writing lesson to the 6th grade students. She helps the students see how their creative minds work and how they are the masters of their own stories.

Snow Equipment - $500

  • School Name: Goodview Elementary
  • Number of Students to Benefit: 200
  • Educational Purpose: Providing students with snow equipment during morning and lunch recess will help increase physical activity. It also aligns with the PBIS directives to provide positive and engaging activities for students to do that will minimize undesired behaviors.

Special Education Curriculum and Materials - $500

  • School Name: Goodview Elementary
  • Number of Students to Benefit: 25
  • Educational Purpose: Many Special Education students need a variety of curriculum and materials in order to learn and be successful in school. Adaptive books can help special education students learn to read. Fine motor task boxes help increase fine motor skills, which increases student independence and access to other activities within and outside of the school environment.

Spun Chair Purchase - $500

  • School Name: W-K Elementary
  • Number of Students to Benefit: 100
  • Educational Purpose: A spun chair provides vestibular input for children who are having a difficult time regulating due to Autism or other behavioral struggles. The spun chair can be moved from room to room to easily meet the needs of individual students.

2021 Dare to Dream Let’s Go Outside! - $5,000

  • School Name: Winona Middle School
  • Number of Students to Benefit: 654
  • Educational Purpose: This plan will offer three outdoor classroom options to the educators of Winona Middle School. Two of the classroom settings will be mobile, which will consist of two sets of 35 camp chairs and outdoor storage units to store the chairs. The third option will be a permanent space for outdoor learning. It will include benches and/or tables around a central teaching area. Having outdoor classroom options will give teachers the ability to get students outside which can increase their ability to focus, regulate their behavior, and increase their overall attentiveness to academics.
