Winona Area Public SchoolsAltra Federal Credit Union recently made a $500 donation to the WSHS Clothing Closet, which provides laundry, clothing and other resources free of charge to students.
The WSHS Clothing Closet initiative was established to make a difference in the lives of low-income and underserved student populations in the district, especially at the secondary level. A growing number of students are not making academic gains and have repeated patterns of absenteeism. The WSHS Clothing Closet initiative shifts away from punishing students and toward meeting their needs so the relationships between student and community can be repaired and restored.
The WSHS Clothing Closet provides discreet access to laundry services, free clothing, personal items and more to students in need to increase student attendance, academic success and student engagement and connectedness to school.
Altra Federal Credit Union's donation of 25 $20 gift cards will help students and families who use the clothing closet and could also benefit from financial support.

Students who want to use the laundry service are first asked to speak with a member of the counseling office or to speak with their teacher. They can then pick up a laundry bag and schedule a time. They can either was the laundry themselves or drop it off and volunteers will wash it for them.
