7th grade students learn through stock market simulation

Winona Middle School students are learning about the 1930s stock market crash with the help of an in-class simulation. Mr. Weadge’s and Mrs. Svendsen 7th-grade classes had $500 to spend during a simulated stock market. During this activity, there were ten different stocks to choose from, businesses included mining, telephone, water supply companies and more. Seven rounds were then implemented and students had to decide how much they want to spend each round and on which stocks. After each round students were able to see the stock changes, decide if they wanted to buy more stock, or sell stock they had purchased.

At the end of the seven rounds, students sold back all the stocks they had bought and got to see who made the most profit during the exchange. Mr. Weadge stated, "The students really enjoy the simulation because it has all of the real highs and lows of participating in the stock market. The simulation ends with a huge market crash much like 1929, and students get to see and feel what it might have been like to lose everything." This activity helped students learn about how the stock market works and how the stock market crash affected America in a simulation.
