5th grade students learn life lessons through music

The walls of Winona Middle School’s music room is not only filled with music, but also rich life lessons. Song names like Best Self Best Work Best World, Bein’ Me, We Are A Family, Friends Forever and Reach for the Rainbow are among the songs that show students how to become their best self.

With big smiles on the students’ faces, they practice their songs for the upcoming 5th grade general music concert. Music classes at Winona Middle School are more than just filling the room with beautiful music. Mrs. Jaime Hanratty’s music class listens and performs songs that are helping students set high goals in life. The song lyrics are about giving their best, improving the world and being a good friend.

One song that is being performed even includes a short rap section. This exposes the students a diverse range of music. Jaime Hanratty said, “I believe that a concert can be much more than kids singing well-known songs for an audience. We can use this opportunity to learn about music as well as life lessons, and help our audience think about some important topics.”  In between each song the students also read intros that relate and lead into the next song. It provides students the chance to collaborate in groups and establish stronger relationships with their peers.

The 5th grade general music concert is January 31 at 6:30 PM at Winona Middle School Auditorium. Performance is directed by Mrs. Jaime Hanratty and Mrs. Courtney Zupancich.
