WAPS to open second application window for Ríos immersion program
Hello families,
If your child will be starting kindergarten in the 2026-27 school year, we want to make sure you don’t miss this opportunity.
Winona Area Public Schools is opening a second application window for our Ríos Spanish Dual Language Immersion program — a one-of-a-kind learning experience that helps students grow as bilingual, biliterate learners while building strong academic and cultural understanding.
We know there was a lot of interest earlier this year, and not every family was able to secure a spot. Because of that, we are taking one more step to see if we can expand the program.
If there is enough interest, we will add a second kindergarten section for next school year.
To help us make that decision, we are asking interested families to complete a short application by Friday, May 8. The application is available at winonaschools.org/rios.
Why families choose Ríos:
- Students learn in both Spanish and English, building bilingual and biliterate skills
- Strong academic expectations with support for every learner
- A welcoming, inclusive environment that values culture and community
- A pathway that continues from kindergarten through Grade 12
Where the program is located:
- Kindergarten: Goodview School
- Grades 1–4: Washington-Kosciusko Elementary
- Grades 5–8: Winona Middle School
- Grades 9–12: Winona Senior High School
We will review interest after May 8 and determine whether we are able to open a second section.
If you’d like to learn more, schedule a tour, or ask questions, please reach out to Goodview Principal Jay Woller at 507-494-2400 or jay.woller@winona.k12.mn.us.
We know choosing a kindergarten program is a big decision. We are here to support you every step of the way — and we would love the chance to welcome your child into the Ríos program.
Thank you,
Winona Area Public Schools
