Standard Response Protocol (SRP)
At Winona Area Public Schools, we use the Standard Response Protocol (SRP) to help keep students and staff safe during any kind of emergency. Developed by the I Love U Guys Foundation and used in more than 45,000 schools nationwide, SRP provides a simple, consistent way to respond quickly — and confidently — in situations that require action.
The protocol uses five clear, easy-to-remember actions, each followed by specific directions to help students and staff know exactly what to do:
- Hold: “In your room or area. Clear the halls.”
Used when hallways need to stay clear, such as during a medical issue or incident in another part of the building.
- Secure: “Get inside. Lock outside doors.”
Used when there is something unsafe outside the building. Students continue learning inside while doors stay locked and monitored.
- Lockdown: “Locks, lights, out of sight.”
Used when there is a threat inside the school. Students stay quiet, out of sight, and doors remain locked.
- Evacuate: “To the announced location.”
Used to move students and staff to another location, inside or outside the building.
- Shelter: “Using a safety strategy.”
Used when personal protection is needed, such as during a tornado or hazardous material event.
We regularly practice each of these responses through safety drills that are calm, age-appropriate, and designed to build confidence — not fear. When students and staff know what to expect and how to respond, it makes everyone feel more prepared.
If an SRP action is used at your child’s school, we will communicate with families using the same language (Hold, Secure, Lockdown, etc.), so you’ll know exactly what’s happening.
