Two Winona Senior High School students took the top two spots in an essay contest hosted by VFW Post 1287.

Morwyn Johnson took the top spot, while Brayden Tremain was second in the Voice of Democracy Essay Contest. The prompt was “How Do I Show Patriotism for My Country?”

Students wrote and then recorded their essays using the school’s podcast equipment. The English department promoted the contest to their students, and English teacher Barrie Schank helped the students edit, print and record their essays for submission.

Both students also read their essays to classmates during the Veterans Day program at WSHS.

Johnson received a $100 gift from the VFW, and her essay was sent to the District level, where she will compete with other Minnesota writers. Students can advance all the way to the national level and compete for a $35,000 college scholarship.

Post members Paul Gady and Linda Reed helped revive the contest, which has been dormant for the past few years.
