Host families, community help Ríos program thrive

The Winona Area Public Schools Ríos Spanish Dual Language Program continues to thrive thanks to the generosity and support of local host families, community organizations and financial partners.

Each year, the Ríos program welcomes talented interns — recent graduates from teacher colleges in Spanish-speaking countries — into WAPS classrooms. These interns provide students with a unique opportunity to learn and grow in both Spanish and English. Students in the Ríos program begin in kindergarten with most of their instruction in Spanish, gradually moving toward an equal balance of Spanish and English by fourth grade.

“This incredible experience wouldn’t be possible without our generous host families and community supporters,” said Ying Hou, the Ríos Amity Internship Coordinator. “By opening your homes and sharing your hearts, you truly embody the spirit of Winona. Your warmth, kindness, and care help our interns feel at home and inspire our students every day. We are deeply grateful for all that you do — you make our program shine!”

Local organizations also play a vital role in supporting the program. Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, several local small businesses, and financial partners — including Merchants Bank, WNB Financial, and Alerus — have all contributed through outreach, donations and community awareness efforts.

A special acknowledgement also goes to the Spanish Language Immersion Program Association (SLIPA) for its ongoing dedication and generosity. Through its fundraising efforts, SLIPA enhances the experience for Ríos interns and provides additional support to help make their time in Winona more meaningful and memorable.

“Because of this support, our interns feel at home in Winona, and our WAPS students gain experiences that go far beyond the classroom,” Hou said. “Together, these groups have built bridges of understanding and friendship that reach across continents.”
