Gilbertson takes on leadership role at WSHS

The last items to leave the walls of the social studies classroom that Steve Gilbertson has called home for the last decade are, in his eyes, the most valuable.

Graduation invites. Lots of them. Evidence of the bond he’s forged with the students he cares about so deeply.

“They helped me become the educator I am today,” Gilbertson said. “I can’t wait to continue those connections in this new role.”

That new role? Gilbertson was recently named assistant principal at Winona Senior High School. He replaced Nathan Warneke, who last month was promoted to WSHS principal in June.

“I’ve come to deeply value the incredible educators and students that make this community special,” Gilbertson said. “I’ve seen the difference strong leadership can make, and I’m excited to help create a school environment where teachers feel supported and students can thrive.”

Gilbertson has been a social studies teacher at WSHS since 2015 and has been making a difference in the lives of Winhawks even longer than that. He served as a coach for several sports while still attending Winona State University.

He is currently the varsity baseball coach for the Winhawks.

Gilbertson grew up in Eau Claire, Wis., and is the son of two teachers — “They showed me how teachers can change lives. They are the reason I became one.”

He has become a respected and admired teacher at WSHS by building strong relationships with students, something he will continue to do as assistant principal.

“My focus will continue to be the relationships I have with the students that walk through our doors. “I can’t wait to work with Mr. Warneke to make Winona Senior High School a place for all to thrive.”
