Summer meal program

Summer meal distribution

School nutrition worker Barb Schewe hands out a meal pack to a family at Jefferson.

Winona Area Public Schools will be expanding its summer meals program in 2020 to better serve more areas in and around Winona. The summer meal program begins Monday, June 8 and runs through Friday, Aug. 14.

WAPS School Nutrition will be delivering lunch and breakfast to 16 sites, including all school sites in Winona, as well as areas in Rollingstone, Stockton, Wilson and Ridgeway.

Update: As of July 1, we are no longer able to serve meals at the Stockton Community Center. Families in Stockton can continue to receive meals at the Country Valley Manufactured Home Community on Hickory Lane. Please fill out the form linked below to change your meal site.

We ask that families who are interested in receiving meals fill out the form linked here.

Once you are signed up, you are signed up for the entire summer. Please call 507-494-1577 by 9 a.m. if you do not plan on picking up your meals.

The meals are for all children 18 and under whether they attend Winona Area Public Schools or not. Children will receive lunch and the following day's breakfast. Refrigeration is needed to maintain safe food temperatures.

When receiving meals, we ask that you adhere to social distancing guidelines established by the Minnesota Department of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The meals do not need to be eaten on site.

How can I support WAPS School Nutrition?

The WAPS School Nutrition Department is proud to fulfill a community need by providing free breakfast and lunch for all students 18 and under this summer.

We love seeing the signs and the cards while we are out delivering meals. Your support means the world to us.

If you are looking for other ways to support the work that we do, please consider a donation to our Feed the Kids Fund.

What is Feed the Kids?

The Feed the Kids Fund is a safety net for K-12 students that do not have sufficient funds in their accounts to cover the cost of school meals and who don’t qualify for meal benefits. This program was established to be a temporary solution until other arrangements can be made to assist the child and family on a more permanent basis.

As unfortunate as it is there are children who go hungry, even in this community. Parents may find themselves in situations that are beyond their control (such as medical problems, unemployment, or family difficulties) and this program will minimize the affect on the children due to these circumstances. Specifically the kids will be provided with nutritious meals. We know kids do better in school if they are well nourished.

How does it work?

Funds are available to provide K-12 students with a nutritious lunch when the need has been identified by the principal, teacher, or other staff member. Before the Feed the Kids funds can be accessed, a referral application must be completed and approved by the School Nutrition Office.

How can I contribute to the Feed the Kids fund?

Donations are needed and accepted year round from individuals or groups. Contributions should be mailed to the School Nutrition Office at 903 Gilmore Avenue, Winona, MN and checks made payable to Winona Area Public Schools Feed the Kids Fund.
