✔ Black students studied scored as much as two grades above grade level by the middle school years
✔ Students with learning disabilities, autism and other categories of special needs scored significantly higher than their peers not in a dual language immersion program
✔ Native English speakers, new immigrants, English Learners, Latinos, Asians, Indigenous groups and students of low socioeconomic status all thrive in DLI programs.
The Ríos Spanish Dual Language Immersion Program at Winona Area Public Schools is currently full for the 2025-26 kindergarten class, but you can add your name to the waitlist.
About the Ríos Spanish Dual Language Immersion Program
The goal of Ríos Spanish Immersion program is to provide educational experiences that support bilingualism and biliteracy in Spanish and English, as well as reinforce high academic standards and increase socio-cultural competency. The program begins in kindergarten and is continued through Grade 12.
Beginning in 2025-26, the Ríos kindergarten classroom will be housed at Goodview Elementary. Grades 1-4 will be housed at Washington-Kosciusko Elementary. Grades 5-8 will continue to be housed at Winona Middle School, and Grades 9-12 will be housed at Winona Senior High School.
It is the only dual language immersion program in Winona County.
All Winona Area Public Schools students will be offered the same rigorous core curriculum in reading, writing, math, science, and social studies. Immersion students will study the same core curriculum and Minnesota academic standards which connect subject areas.
Ríos students will also have the opportunity to graduate with a Minnesota State Seal of Biliteracy, which earns credits in the Minnesota State University system.

Host an Amity intern
We are in need of host families for our Amity interns for the 2025-26 school year. If we do not have any families offer to host, we will not be able to accept interns into the program.
The interns are a special part of our Ríos Spanish Dual Language Immersion program. If you have an extra room in your house, an extra seat at your table and a little space in your heart, please consider taking part in this enriching opportunity.
You do not need to be a WAPS family to host. Others can help with transportation to and from school, and in many other ways.
