Ríos Spanish Dual Language Immersion Program

Each year, there is an application window to apply to the program, usually in February. Instructions on how to apply are posted at winonaschools.org/rios and sent to families through the WAPS messaging system. 

At the end of the application window, district leadership determines if there is enough interest in the program to add an additional section (classroom) of kindergarten for the following year. If a second kindergarten section is added, additional applicants will be accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis. If there is only one section offered, and there are more applicants than spots, a lottery will be held. 

Because the circumstances surrounding each application year may differ, please reach out to the building principal or fill out the question form if you need additional information.

• Students will become proficient listeners, speakers, writers and readers in both Spanish and English.
• It is the only language immersion program in Winona County. 
• Students will master content in the same subject areas as their counterparts who do not attend the program.
• Students will develop an appreciation of other cultures in addition to their own.

The Ríos Dual Language Spanish Immersion program started in the 2014-15 school year and has continued to evolve since Day 1. The journey began with a vision to create a community of bilingual champions, and over the years, we’ve refined our approach to ensure a dynamic, effective and sustainable learning experience. We are committed to hearing from our families about what’s working well and what can be improved to make a program that continues to flourish. 

Studies have shown that native Spanish speakers enrolled in dual language programs tend to achieve academic English proficiency at a faster rate and have higher academic achievement rates compared to their peers of similar language backgrounds.

WAPS encourages families of all backgrounds to consider the Rios Spanish Dual Language Immersion along with all of our strong programs. According to researchers:

• Black students studied scored as much as two grades above grade level by the middle school years
• Students with learning disabilities, autism and other categories of special needs scored significantly higher than their peers not in a dual language immersion program
• Native English speakers, new immigrants, English Learners, Latinos, Asians, Indigenous groups and students of low socioeconomic status all thrive in DLI programs.
   

All Winona Area Public Schools offer the same rigorous core curriculum in reading, writing, math, science, and social studies. Dual language immersion students will study the same core curriculum and Minnesota academic standards which connect subject areas.

Students will begin to understand the Spanish language and use words and phrases in kindergarten. In Grades 1-2, students will be able to speak, read and write in Spanish. 

Dual language immersion teachers will use body language, visuals, manipulatives and expressions to communicate the meaning of Spanish words with students. All teachers are bilingual, so in case of an emergency, clear instructions will be given in English as well as Spanish.
