Archery

5th-8th Grade Noncompetitive

This program will be directed by the National Archery in the Schools (NASP) and DNR certified instructors. Experienced group will meet from 4:15-5:00 p.m. The beginner group will meet from 5:00-5:45 p.m. The experienced group is for anyone who has participated in the NASP instruction in physical education classes or participated in the club last year. Participants will use the Genesis bows and supplies provided by the club. Students may ride the bus to Ridgeway and MUST be picked up by parents when done. SPACE IS LIMITED (20 students per group).

Baseball

5th-8th Grade Noncompetitive

Do you play summer baseball? Are you a little rusty from the long winter? If so, this is your opportunity to get ready for summer or just enjoy the spring baseball season. Boys will work on the basics: hitting, throwing, pitching, catching, etc. They will have fun playing together as a team before summer rivals begin! Weekly intramural games will be played. Transportation will be provided from the Winona Middle School to Lake Park Ballfields. Parents MUST pick up your child at the practice site. In case of inclement weather, we may start this program indoors conditioning at Winona Middle School pool/fitness center.

Baseball practice starts around the middle of March. While indoors, we practice in the middle school gyms. Once outdoors, we utilize the middle school ball fields. The season consist of approximately 16-20 games from team in the surrounding areas. There is no conference for baseball so travel is dependent on who has open games in schedules. 5th-8th Grade Noncompetitive

Slam dunk your way into a great basketball season! Students will practice skills, drills, and ball control. Teams will be formed and intramural games will be played. Emphasis will be on preparing participants for competitive play as 7th graders. Transportation will be provided from Winona Middle School to W-K. Parents MUST pick up your child at W-K at 5:15 p.m. There will be no practice the week of December 19th. Sign up now, it's time to get your game on!

Boys basketball practice starts at the end of October, while the girls start right after Winter Break. All practices are at the Winona Middle School right after school. The 8th grade plays in the big gym while the 7th grade plays in the small gym. The season consist of approximately 12-16 games from team in the surrounding areas. Basketball plays in the Three Rivers Conference (Wisconsin). We have both a 7th grade and 8th grade teams.

Cheerleading

5th-8th Grade Noncompetitive

It's time to "Bring It On"! Grab your tennis shoes, shorts, and get your best cheer moves ready. Cheerleaders will practice two times a week. They will work on cheers, kicks, formations, and above all, have FUN! Uniforms will be provided while they cheer at a 7th and an 8th grade home football game. No experience is necessary. Show your orange and black school spirit, and get ready to "Bring It On"!

Cross Country

5th-8th Grade Noncompetitive

If you enjoy distance running and conditioning, then you have found the perfect fall sport for you. Students will run daily, short and long distances. They will run a 5K early on to test their time, and again at season’s end to gauge their improvement. They will encourage each other and learn to run as a team.

All runners, male and female, will practice and play with the high school team. We do not offer middle school teams. Practice typically starts on the second Monday in August and will start at the high school. Our lone home meet will be held at St. Mary's University. All runners, no matter ability will run in meets. Dance Team

5th-8th Grade Noncompetitive

It’s time to get dancing! Dance team will teach you the basics of hip hop, jazz, and high kick dance. Dance team is for dancers of all levels and experience. There will be a final show for the parents to show off what dancers have learned. Grab a friend and your dance shoes (tennis shoes are fine) and get moving to the music!

Are you ready for some football? Do you love football, but tackle football isn't quite for you? Flag football might just be your calling. Students will learn the basics of football: throwing, receiving, kicking, etc. Teams will be formed and games will be played. Teams will develop plays with the help of their coach. Participants will have the opportunity to play and learn different positions. Sportsmanship is encouraged, but FUN is mandatory!

Adaptive Floor Hockey season start in November. Practices take place on Monday's and Wednesday's and games are typically on Monday's and Wednesday's as well. Golf

5th-8th Grade Noncompetitive

Let’s go golfing! This class is designed for students who possess basic golf skills and know the etiquette of the game. During this session, the goal will be to improve your skills. This class is not intended for beginners. Participants will be transported to Cedar Valley Golf Course via a route bus. Students will practice on the driving range, putting green, and play holes on the Monster course. Parents MUST pick up their child at the Golf Course. Participants must provide their own clubs and golf balls (which can be stored at Cedar Valley during this session).

Gymnastics practice starts around the third Monday in November. All practices are at Kidsport. (WInona Mall) Home meets are held in the large Middle School Gym. We have a Varsity and JV team. Nordic Ski

7th-8th Grade Competitive

All Nordic Skiers, male and female, will practice and compete with the high school team. We do not offer middle school teams. Practice typically starts on the third Monday in November. Until we receive snow, the teams will practice with roller skies around the high school. Once we have adequate snow, the team will move practices and all home meets to St. Mary's University. We do have equipment for any person that would like to try Nordic Skiing but does not want to invest in equipment of their own. Once finalized, schedules can be found on Big 9 Conference. Are you a soccer fanatic, or are you just interested in learning the game? Either way, soccer is a great game to play. Students will be taught the basics of soccer and ball control. They will run drills, work on skills, and play games. Participants will play different positions so they can find their niche. Grab your shin guards and let the games begin!

Calling all swimmers! Whether you are a beginner, intermediate, or advanced, you are encouraged to join. Swimmers will learn new strokes or perfect the ones they already know. There will also be plenty of fun time as well. Our coaches are qualified instructors and lifeguards. Grab your suit and towel and jump on in. Michael Phelps had to get his start somewhere. Participants will work on new skills while perfecting their current ones. You will play intramural games against your friends, new and old. Drama Club

6th - 8th Grade

The goal of Drama Club is to have fun while we work as a team to increase stage comfort, enhance acting skills, improve vocal abilities and projection, and perform in front of family, friends, neighbors, and complete strangers! Auditions will be held in December; everyone who auditions will be given a part. More males are always needed and are strongly encouraged to join.

Not comfortable on stage? We have a place for Drama Club members who want to work backstage or in the light and sound booth. Students' rehearsal schedules will vary according to their character. Attendance at rehearsals is critical in order to produce a quality show and Drama Club takes a lot of time and commitment.

Dorothy in Wonderland - March 23 -24, 2018

You think you know the story - think again! A second tornado sends the over the rainbow crew to Wonderland. Dorothy is now trying to catch the White Rabbit and Alice is trying to make sense of Glinda, the good witch. This is nothing but fun from start to finish.

Meetings will be held in September, October, and November for Drama Club members to meet the directors and each other, and to lay the ground work for the upcoming musical. Auditions will be held in December - EVERYONE who auditions will receive a part. Play rehearsals will begin in January.

Fitness Center

Fitness Center is an activity that is open to all 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th graders on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Boys and girls are encouraged to come and prepare for a sport or develop a healthy lifestyle. All students must have a registration and parent permission slip turned into After School Activities, as well as a Sports Physical before they can participate. Students must sign up each day in the After School Activities Office to be able to attend.

Fire Arm Safety

Firearm safety will be offered to students who will be 11 years old and older by the first day of class. The cost for this class is $13. You will be required to pay an online fee of $7.50 to the DNR after the class is finished to receive your certificate. The child/adult attending the class will need to bring a lunch. You must attend all classes to receive your certification! If you are under the age of 18, a parent must accompany the student to the first day of class (Saturday, September 9th) from 8:30-9 am to complete the DNR paperwork prior to your child starting class.

Jazz Band

WMS Jazz Band meets Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 8:00 - 8:45am and performs two evening concerts in conjunction with the WSHS Jazz Band. Traditional instrumentation is used and includes: trumpets, trombones, saxophones and rhythm (piano, bass and drums). Auditions for the Jazz Band happen in the fall and are open to 7th and 8th graders. The WMS Jazz Band performs at the Young Writer's Conference, the 8th Grade Recognition Ceremony, and tours the Winona Elementary Schools. They also attend the University of La Crosse, Wisconsin Jazz Festival every other year.

Lego Club

Lego Club is student driven so the direction and/or creations will be decided upon by the participants. Legos will be supplied. Students may bring their own Legos to create with and will be kept separate. Don’t “Lego” your school year go by without some fun!

Marching Band

The WMS Marching Band is made up of all 7th and 8th grade band students.Marching band begins in May and marches throughout the summer. Rehearsals and parade schedules are published in April. Marching band members are required to have black pants, black socks and black shoes. A polo will be provided. Rehearsals are at the middle school.

Student Council

Student Council’s main goal is to create a positive atmosphere in and around the school to make school a place where students enjoy themselves and feel like they are apart of the school. Student Council gives students the opportunity to get involved and feel like they can make a difference.

How do you get on Student Council?

Officers are elected the year before. You have to be an 8th grader to run for President. Our VP is a 7th grader, and the Sec./Treasurer position could be either.

Students that are interested have to fill out an application and then they are voted on by their classmates.
