Student of the Month Ahniya Morgan - 4th Grade
The Washington-Kosciusko Elementary student of the month is Ahniya Morgan. Ahniya is a spectacular fourth grade student! She comes to school each day ready and willing to learn with an extremely positive attitude. Ahniya is always respectful to all the staff and students at WK. She is very responsible and has her work completed neatly and on time. Ahniya is quick to volunteer to help others including both staff and students. Her positive attitude, polite disposition, friendliness, and bright smile are qualities that make her an outstanding individual! Message from Principal Dear Families,
It is amazing that we are entering May already. April has been a busy month with MCA testing consuming the month. The third and fourth grade students and teachers worked super hard during testing. It was impressive, and we feel that the students had the best possible learning environment possible. Our monthly theme was Perseverance, and all students demonstrated it throughout the month by being quiet in the hallways and working hard in their classrooms. I want to give a big shout out to all the people who volunteer in our building. The last week of April celebrated volunteers. Without our wonderful volunteers, many things would not be possible.
It is also the time to recognize our Administrative professionals. We are so fortunate to have wonderful people in these roles in our building. Thanks to Helen Kanthack, our media secretary; Leilla Cady, our nutrition secretary; Sally Johnson, our health secretary, and Linda Vannorman, our school secretary for all their hard work and positive attitudes. We are so grateful for them every day. We are grateful for a wonderful PTA and all the volunteers who help make our school special.
May 6th-10th is Teacher Appreciation Week, with May 7th being Teacher Appreciation Day. We have amazing teachers at WK, and this is our opportunity to honor and celebrate them. Thank you to each of those individuals that work so hard and are committed to making sure ALL of our students are learning, growing, and feel part of our WK family.
Our theme for May is Celebration. The students have worked hard, and we have many good things to recognize. The month will be busy with learning, field trips, and memorable experiences. We have our Spring Sing coming up on Thursday, May 17th. Mrs. Merchlewitz and the students have been working hard to prepare, and it is always a wonderful night for all.
Sincerely, Dawn Waller-Lueck School News 19-20 Teacher Requests If you have a teacher request, please put it into writing and submit by May 13th. Many things go into class scheduling, so please know the requests will be considered, but not necessarily guaranteed.

Summer Slide Have you heard of the “summer slide?” Unfortunately, it is real. The summer slide is a decline in academic skills that can occur over the summer months when school is not in session. Staff and students work hard throughout the year to build stamina and skills, however, research shows a decline when students return in the fall. Here are a few ways to keep your child’s skills sharp:
If you have internet access, here are a few resources the students will have access to over the summer months. Please ask your child’s teacher if you need login information.
Walk/Bike to School May 8th It’s almost time to strap on that helmet and pedal with passion! National Bike to School Day is May 8, 2019. Communities across the U.S. joined together in 20018 at more than 3,200 schools to make it the largest Walk/Bike to School Day event in its seven-year history. With your dedication, participation can be even greater this year. Arrive no later than 7:15 AM. We will start walking at 7:20 AM.
Volunteers Needed - In order to make this event a success, we welcome adult parents/volunteers to help walk with the kids at each site. If you are able to help us on Wednesday, May 8, please email linda.jacobs@winona.k12.mn.us to volunteer. School Calendar
